No bones about it: 3D Creative is a success
Wellington design company 3D Creative is once again proving it’s the leader of
the pack when it comes to creating technically and visually outstanding
exhibitions, with today’s official launch of the GNS NZ Fossils: Dead Precious!
touring exhibition.
The exhibition, which features over 50 backlit and feature graphics with audio
visual displays, is carefully crafted to tell the age old stories of New Zealand
fossils in a way that is stimulating and fresh.
“We wanted to create an interactive environment that really allows people to
experience the wonders of fossils and what they reveal about our past as well as
our future”, explained Craig Turvey, 3D Creative’s founder and director.
“The challenge was to take a topic that may traditionally be viewed as dry and
visually unexciting and turn it into a feast for the senses. We have combined the
latest technology with some of the oldest relics of the past to create something
unique and enticing.
“Our client, GNS Science, has been blown away by the result. This is the first
time their collection has been shown to the public and they are rapt with our
innovative approach.”
Alongside the skull of a Giant Shark-Toothed dolphin, a one metre long oyster
shell and a 40 million year old crayfish is a custom built modular display system,
audio visual displays featuring animated three dimensional scans of the fossils,
and a photo-real animation of a mausasaur devouring a giant ammonite.
“This exhibition makes science accessible and interesting to people of all ages”,
said Turvey.
3D Creative was a finalist in the Design Institute of New Zealand (DINZ) Awards
held this month for two of their recent projects, Te Puia (the revamped New
Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute) in Rotorua and Franz Josef’s Hukawai
Glacier Centre. The company has been involved with over 300 design projects in
the ten years since its inception and is responsible for many of New Zealand’s
most popular tourist centres and museum exhibitions.
The NZ Fossils: Dead Precious! exhibition will feature in seven museums
nationwide and will run until September 2009
(note; tour has been extended to mid 2010)
