The Hukawai Glacier Centre is a purpose built, stand-alone building set in the heart of the Franz Josef township on the West Coast .
The centre integrates state-of-the-art model and prop making, computer generated animations, thematic lighting, over 60 interpretive graphic panels and over 20 multi-media, audiovisual interactives.
The 900sqm Glacier Centre, incorporating a café and retail outlet, allows visitors to explore an entire glacier valley environment - starting in a rainforest and leading to a glacier-like space reflecting the features of the Franz Josef Glacier complete with ice caves and crevasse. the multi-sensory experience captures the uniqueness of the west coast glacier environment.
Hukawai features an 8-metre high ice-climbing wall is the only one in the Southern Hemisphere, enabling up to 20 climbers at a time to experience an ice climb in a 100sqm ice room, whatever the outside weather conditions.
